Threshold's Fall Line at Target

I think I've been in denial that summer's coming to a close. Every year, even as I sweat my way through August (and apparently September this year), I start to get sad that I soon won't be able to run around in a tank top and shorts and will instead be bundling up in sweaters. But you know what has gotten me excited about the fall season this year?

Target.

Y'all. I'm kind of dying over the new fall line from their Threshold brand. There are just so many cozy, shiny, pretty, fall-like things. It's taking all of my self-control not to go fill half a dozen carts with items like this copper + marble lamp or this wood + metal bench.

#targetdoesitagain

In my attempt to not spend all the monies, I decided to gather up all my favorites into a lovely virtual list and share it (very enthusastically!) with y'all. So please, enjoy, and I'm sorrynotsorry if you end up filling half a dozen shopping carts with all the pretty things.

Who else (besides Emily Henderson and me) is excited about this line?

Modern Coastal Home Inspiration

{Coastal Living}

Hey there friends! I hope you all had good weekends. My husband finished his first year of grad school last week and we packed up and headed out to spend some time at my parents' river house (remember these posts from last summer?). Being here is always such a treat and nice change of pace compared to the hustle and bustle of city life. We'll actually be "stationed" here for a bit so there may not be many projects on the blog for awhile, but I've got one big, fun one planned for when we get back, so stay tuned! For now, I'll be spending my time enjoying the view of the water from the screen porch and relaxing after a very busy season in our lives.

Being in my parents' beautiful home with coastal-inspired decor got me dreaming about "modern coastal" style - a style I'm certainly drawn to - so I thought I'd share a few of my favorite images with y'all today. When I think of that style, I think casual cozy spaces and furniture, fresh white shiplap paneling, nautical touches, rough-hewn woods,  stripes, a range of blues, etc. It has a lot of overlap with the farmhouse look too. I hope you'll be inspired by these pretty shots and maybe infuse a little "modern coastal" into your homes this summer!

Storage & Organization Ideas for Our Laundry Area/Guest Bathroom

After showing y'all the weirdest room in our house a couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd start brainstorming ways to make it more functional and maybe even a little bit prettier. This guest bathroom/laundry room functions primarily as a laundry room first and a bathroom second (since we don't have guests too too often), but I'd like to add some storage space for linens as well. I wanted to pull together some inspiration to help guide me along as I make this weird space into something awesome, so will you join me in a little brainstorming sesh today?

Perhaps you've got a small laundry room that could use a little organization too? I hope these ideas will be helpful for you as well!

Simple shelves like these would be great for holding laundry detergent and extra linens. Going vertical with storage is a great way to maximize the space.

But, if you're a renter like me, maybe you can't install something permanent like shelves. An over the door solution like the one below would fit the bill for stashing some of the smaller items like laundry detergent and as a holding place for those socks that are missing their counterpart.

Another great solution for storage is freestanding shelving. I like the flexibility and adjustability of industrial metal shelving (plus, if you read my post the other day, the shelving would have to fit on top of the lovely bidet or the washer/dryer down there, so this would be a great solution). Throw a couple of baskets on those shelves and boom. Instant organization.

I'd love to have a drying rack for delicates and other non-dryer-worthy clothes. A DIY like this one from Centsational Girl is on my list of project ideas!

Another, no-building-necessary solution would be a valet hook - this little wall-mounted guy is so compact, but so handy!

{BHG}

What are your favorite small-space solutions for laundry rooms?

I hope to have some progress to share with you soon on our weird laundry/guest bathroom space!

Pretty Alternatives to the Not-So-Pretty Boob Light

So, you know those lists that pop up on blogs and your Facebook newsfeed like 10 of the Hottest Design Trends for 2015? Well, you know what I never see make those kinds of lists? Something affectionately known as the boob light. It appears in homes all over America and has sneakily become the go to flush mount ceiling fixture. In case you're unfamiliar with this style of ceiling fixture, here's a lovely example:

We have a total of have five - yes, five! - in our little rental. Oy. Since we rent, we're not allowed to take them down, so I'm just happily ignoring them, but that doesn't mean I can't dream about the pretty fixtures I'll put a future house someday :).

(P.S. No offense if you have these and like them! They're just not my favorite. To each his own, right?)

Many of us need to have flush mount or semi-flush mount ceiling fixtures in our homes, and I've got some good alternatives to the boob light to share with y'all today. Here are some of my favorites:

What do you think? Does seeing these make you want to replace the boob lights in your home? There are some real beauties out there and they can add such great style to a space!

Chairish Color Challenge: Designing Around A Rug

Clockwise from top left:

Happy Monday, y'all! For today's post, I've teamed up with Chairish: an exclusive, curator approved, online marketplace for vintage and used furniture. If you're in the market for a one of a kind piece, you definitely need to check this site out! They challenged me to choose one of their fun rugs from a selection they provided and use it as inspiration to design a room full of color. {To see their current rug collection, check out this page.}

I stepped way out of my comfort zone for this challenge and chose this Grass Green Abrash Turkish rug (it's still available as of the publishing of this post!). Bright, overdyed rugs are definitely not my go-to style, so it was a stretch to start with that and design the rest of the room around it. Once I got going though, I must say, it was really fun to pull this living room inspiration board together. The style I decided to go for? Sophisticated and slightly feminine.

When it comes to designing a room - even a colorful one - I like to keep my "big pieces" neutral so that I can add pops of color in with things like pillows, lamps and other accessories. I tend to change my mind a lot about color palettes depending on the season (and my mood, ha!), and it's much easier to change out a pillow or a piece of art than a sofa. I chose a tailored, modern sofa from West Elm in a beautiful gray, and a whitewashed wood and metal coffee table (also from West Elm) as my base pieces.

From there, I chose a piece of artwork from Minted that incorporated that beautiful grass green in the rug and used the rest of the colors in it as inspiration to add color to the other pieces in the room. Pinks, yellows, greens and blues dominate this space. That might sound like a lot of colors, but when used in proper proportions and mixed in with neutrals, they fit together quite nicely! And when you have something like that piece of artwork that includes many of the colors, it really ties the whole room together in my book :).

I absolutely love mix of colors and patterns in the pillows. Two are from one of my favorite textile designers, Caitlin Wilson, and the third is from H&M home - one of my favorite places for super affordable home items. I love mixing higher end and more affordable pieces together.

The other accessories in the room: the curvy gourd lamp, round mirror and woven storage basket complete the look by adding a little texture, sophistication, and softer edges to complement the sharper angles of the other pieces.

Putting together this style board really inspired me to add some more colors into our own living room. I'm in the process of changing out some accessories (hello, pillows!) and can't wait to show y'all some progress soon. Thanks, Chairish, for providing this rug challenge - I had a blast putting this room together!

Let's Talk Trash Cans

I promised an update on the office or master bedroom on Monday, but I've had a few unexpected delays... I hope I'll have something to share tomorrow and if not then - definitely next week!

Y'all. Stop the presses. I have a very important decision to make and I need your help. *sarcasm alert* Our trash can step mechanism broke over the weekend and it looks like there's no fixing it, so we're in the market for a new one.

I know. I know. Big life decisions. #firstworldproblems

You might be saying to yourself, "Are we really talking trash cans today, Chaney?" And my response would be yes, yes. we. are. If you live in a house - I presume most of you have a roof of some sort over your heads - you know how much of a difference a good trash can can make. Am I right?

We've had a simplehuman one for the past 5ish years and it has served us well, but it finally bit the dust. I started looking at trash cans a couple of days ago and - dang - trash cans can be expensive! I would really rather not spend $100+ on one, but many of the best-rated ones are at least that much.

{Inspiration} Small Spaces That Pack A Lot of Punch

The countdown to moving is ON. We head to Philadelphia next weekend! Ever since we signed the lease on our little house, I've been brainstorming about how to make it our home. The house clocks in at just about 1,000 square feet, so each space is going to have to be hard-working to function well and look good at the same time.  Even though we've been living in a small space in DC, the space is set up so differently in this one that I feel like I'm starting from scratch in terms of decorating and organizing (that's not a bad thing!). I've been rounding up some inspiration on small homes that do design, space planning and organization well, and I wanted to share a few of my favorite images and why they work with y'all today.

Let the fun begin!

1 | Up the seating capacity in the living room with low profile and mobile items like these poufs. They don't take up much space, and provide comfortable landing spots for extra company.

Magazine Files {My Secret Weapon for Office Organization}

This post was supposed to go up on the heels of last week's office update post, but got a little delayed over my excitement about being in a magazine (eek! still freaking out). So here we are today, picking back up where I left off last week!

I showed you this photo of my "grasscloth" upholstered Expedit and talked about how these magazine files that are up on the top row of cubbies are my secret weapon when it comes to keeping the office organized. They used to actually hold magazines, but since I hadn't looked at a single one since I stored them there, I figured it was time to toss those into the recycling bin and find a new use for these guys. Turns out they're perfect for storing some miscellaneous office supplies that I need to have handy everyday, but that I don't want to have to see all the time - ya know what I mean?

Concealed storage = less visual clutter.

So if I'm not storing magazines in here, what am I storing?

Well, in one I keep two reams of printer paper. I go through a lot of paper for my job (sorry environment!), but since I'd rather not keep a big ole industrial-sized box of it out and visible, I keep two reams handy in one of the magazine files. When I finish one off, I replace it with another from the larger box.

When my printer runs out of paper, it's really easy to reach behind me (since the Expedit sits behind my desk) and grab a stack to reload it. This is much more efficient than having to get up and retrieve the paper from the big box that's stored elsewhere in our apartment.

The second thing I store in one of these files is blank charts (manila folders). Just like a doctor's office, I have a chart for each patient I see. Similar to the printer paper, I've got a whole big box of these elsewhere, but it's much easier to keep a bunch nearby that I can easily grab on the fly when I need them.

And lastly, working from home means that I've become BFFs with my FedEx Express man. I pretty much run a tiny FedEx Office out of my apartment since I have to ship stuff to my boss or our home office almost every day. It was driving me nuts not having a good, easy-to-access place for all my envelopes and shipping supplies when I first started working from home (picture shipping labels and tracking receipts scattered all over my desk area!). Then one day it hit me that I could store my supplies in one of the magazine files and voila! Problem solved.

They're easy to pull out with one hand and grab what I need. Sometimes I even pull out a couple of them at a time and sit them on the floor next to my desk. At the end of the day, back they go into the Expedit, which helps me keep my work area clutter-free.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, they used to be plain white, but I added a strip of white and yellow washi tape along the top and bottom to jazz 'em up a little bit.

Using these magazine files for non-traditional purposes is one of my absolute favorite ways I've come up with to keep my home office organized. I even have three empty ones in the next door cubby that I'm figuring out how to make more useful for storage. Love having room to grow! Any of y'all use them not for magazines?

So that's my secret weapon for keeping a crucial part of my home office organized and improving my workflow.

Using What You Have to Refresh Your Home {31 Days: Day 26}

This 31 Days series on using and loving what I have has been super fun and stretched me to be more creative with the ways I think about and approach our the decor and function of items in our home. Most of the projects I've done have been very specific to things that I have on hand, but today I want to generalize the principles about using what you have and give you some ideas on how you can refresh or transform what you have so that your home can be a place you love even more!

First, switching out pillow covers is one of the easiest, low commitment things you can do. If you're like me, you probably have a yard or two of extra fabric laying around that you could make a simple envelope pillow from, or you may just have extra pillow covers buried deep in a closet somewhere. If you want to learn how to sew, an envelope pillow cover is a great place to start. There are tutorials all over the web for that, but the dog bed I made for Jackson is actually an envelope pillow cover, so if you want some simple instructions (albeit, for something much larger than a throw pillow!), take a look at that post.

If you don't have fabric to make a pillow cover or you don't have any extras buried in a closet, the other option is to steal pillows from another room in your house. I recently stole a ruffly pillow off our bed and used it on our living room couch and I love it there!

Second, shifting furniture around can have a huge impact on a space. It can be as simple as switching out an end table or as complicated as changing the whole arrangement of your living room. Maybe you've always been frustrated with how a room "flows" - if that's the case, move things around! One suggestion? Sketch out what you have in mind with rough measurements first before you break a sweat trying to move a huge piece of furniture.

Try it out, and if you don't like it, good news - you can always change it back!

Third, break out that paint! Raise your hand if you have a half-empty can or two of paint in a closet or garage somewhere? Oh good, me too. Don't you dare step foot into a paint store until you've assessed the colors and amount of paint you already have on hand. Do you need to paint a room or a piece of furniture? If it's something small, I'll bet you've got plenty of paint to work with on hand. If it's a room, make SURE you have enough of that color or you'll find yourself in the sometimes painful situation of trying to have the guy at Home Depot match the paint you bought there five years ago (bad idea).

Paint is also a low-commitment change (though more permanent than switching out a throw pillow) that can completely change the look of an area of your home. It's usually totally worth the couple of hours you have to put in!

Fourth, another very low commitment way to refresh your home is to change up the accesories you have around the house. Most of us have a tendency to leave things in their places once we put them there (broad generalization, but I think it's mostly true), but how boring is that? Rearrange your bookcases, style that console table with things from the living room, pull a decorative bowl or two from the kitchen and fill it with pinecones. Be creative! Change things up seasonally or whenever you feel like it. Try something new!

Fifth, mix up the contents of your picture frames. Gallery walls are PERFECT for this. Have a favorite card you want to show off? How 'bout a piece of art? One of the millions of free printables out there? Grab a frame off the wall that has that ten year old picture in it and change things up. You can always put its original contents back in it later.

Another idea is to move frames around the house. Move your wedding photo from the entryway to your bedroom, or move that big piece of art from the dining room to over the sofa in the living room. Again, the theme of this post is to try something new! Refresh things without spending a cent!

And here's a Pinterest-ready graphic in case you want to pin these tips for future reference!

Happy weekend!

Dreaming About...Headboards. (I Need Your Help!)

Ever since we moved to DC, we haven't had a headboard for our bed. In Richmond, we re-purposed five bifold doors to make a headboard, which I loved, but they didn't look right in our new place. So they went off to a new home via a "free stuff" posting on Craigslist. I keep meaning to do another DIY of some description, but I've been super indecisive about what I want. Does this happen to anyone else (wink wink)? So for a year, we've been headboard-less. I think that's why I haven't really shown your our bedroom here on the ole blog. Silly reason, I know, but that's about to change, because I'm enlisting your help on coming up with a solution to this little issue.

Here's the most current photo I have of our bedroom. It's unstaged, un-decluttered (is that an oxymoron?), and generally how it looks on an everyday basis...if we make the bed :).

There are lots of changes I'd like to make here, but I'm going to try to focus on the headboard issue for now. Let me tell you a little bit about our bedroom...

The room has a bit of an odd, but cool shape to it, as you can see. The wall angles make the bed area of the room sort of a half-octagon shape (the rest of the room is a regular rectangle) and our queen bed snuggles up right in the middle of it.

Our bedding is mostly Pottery Barn. The duvet/shams are the Pearl Embroidered collection in Porcelain Blue, the quilt is the Hanna Quilt in Porcelain Blue. The two ruffly small gray pillows were a Marshalls or TJMaxx pick up from a few years ago.

I love that oil painting up there - it just "fits" the room. The chunky wood frame brings in a lot of warmth since most of the colors in the room are on the cool side. I'd love for it to stay, but that does mean the headboard should be on the shorter side I think.

Our two swing arm floor lamps are fine for now (although I really wish I could install some swing arm sconces), and they actually have solid white shades on them now (since I repurposed one of them for the wood shim pendant light above our dining table).

One other thing I should note is that we have this awesome charcoal gray and white chevron rug at the foot of the bed. I don't have a great photo of it by itself, but it's this one:

Had to have something a little more on the wild side with all that civilized bedding up there. You can actually catch a glimpse of it in some of the "before" photos of the coral and gray dipped side table post.

So my question is, what kind of headboard should I go for? (That's not a rhetorical question - I really want your opinions!) I'm leaning heavily in the upholstered headboard direction, and I've even completed one step so far - buying foam - ha! :) The blogging world is just FULL of DIY versions, so I've got plenty of inspiration. I just can't settle on one!

Here are a few of my faves (I'm focusing mostly on shape here, not fabric or colors).

Love the sophisticated look of this upholstered headboard with arms from Sarah M. Dorsey Designs:

The fabric on this DIY version of the Pottery Barn Raleigh Headboard from Tenth Avenue South is a drop cloth - so clever!

Probably not orange, but I love the shape and style of this nailhead-trimmed one via Little Green Notebook:

So much awesomeness in this shapely upholstered headboard by The Hunted Interior:

This simple straight headboard by Kerrisdale Design Inc. would be simplest to DIY:

Or how about some button tufting? This straight headboard with wings by Sarah M. Dorsey Designs (again!) is lovely:

Lots of great ideas out there, huh? There are so many others as well, but I figure this is a good sampling.

So now that you've seen the current state of my bedroom, what do you think? Are you on board with the upholstered headboard idea? If you are, which one of these do you think would "fit" our room? Opinions, please! :)
