Lovely Links

Happy Friday everyone - and happy Superbowl weekend! I'm a little bit torn on who to root for this weekend. I used to work with the high school where Russell Wilson (QB for the Seahawks) went, so although he graduated a year before I arrived there, I love rooting for him. I'm also a huge Peyton Manning fan - he's an amazing football player (dare I say legend?) and on top of that, an all around good dude. Who are you rooting for this weekend?

Now onto this week's favorite links!

1 | In honor of Superbowl XLVIII, my first lovely link of the week is this video. I literally cry-laughed at this "bad lip reading" from the NFL. Hilarious.

2 | In case actually watching the Superbowl isn't your thing, perhaps you might be interested in throwing an anti-Superbowl party? Style Me Pretty has got you covered with plenty of ideas for that one.

3 | And back to our regular programming with this DIY geometric lamp. Oh. my gosh. Sarah's done it again - that girl is so creative and talented!

4 | If we do, in fact, have a second bedroom like I'm hoping for in our next home, I'm picturing a space with this feel for my work-from-home office. I've got the Expedit, desk and now a pretty white chair - all I need is a room for it all to go into that isn't our bedroom! (P.S. I know I've been all cryptic and vague about our moving plans... I hope to have more in the coming weeks to share!)

5 | I love Cassie's newly painted black fireplace (and that she decided to keep the brass!) and hide rug. You'll have to head to her blog to see what a difference a little bit of paint made!

6 | If you're a renter and find yourself living with a kitchen you're not totally in love with (but can't change, of course!), you'll love these tips for maximizing the space and making it your own.

7 | Thanks, Don Draper, for these words. :)

8 | Lastly, I think the blog world has changed dramatically over the past couple of years. It used to be THE place to go for inspiration on home decor, DIY, etc., but now sites like Pinterest have taken over. People don't comment or interact as much (why comment when you can just pin it, right?), and our attention is divided up more and more and more with the constant stream that is social media. I've got lots more thoughts on that, but I'll let you read Jennifer's "Epic Ode to Blogging" post on this topic instead of hearing me ramble today since it echoes my thoughts! It's really beautiful and honest. Take a minute to read it if this resonates with you!

Have wonderful weekends everybody!

DIY Rustic Wood Stump Cake Stand

Way back in August, I got an email from my father-in-law asking me if I wanted him to save some wood from a dogwood tree he had to cut down for a construction project. He remembered from this post that I had an interest in making a cake stand out of wood from the great outdoors and thought that this would be perfect for it. Isn't that thoughtful? Of course I said yes immediately.

So the last time we visited my husband's family, I got to work on making the cake stand. I sanded down and evened out the pieces. He had done the quick and dirty cutting with a chain saw, so all I had to do was the finishing touches :). Here's what I started with:

All I did was use a belt sander to smooth out the surface of the piece that was going to go on top, then trimmed off the bottom of the stump (for the base) with a miter saw so it would sit flat. I didn't take any photos (sorry!) since I was busy trying to not sand or cut off my hand during this part.

To attach the top to the bottom, I just slathered on some wood glue and laid something heavy on top of it while it dried. It's not a huge cake stand, so I figure wood glue should hold pretty well.

Pretty simple, huh?

Now I have myself a rustic wood stump cake stand. Yippee! I love the dogwood bark and color of the wood. I should probably seal it, but I haven't gotten around to that yet. I did have some time to enjoy styling it up though!

Does having this give me a good excuse to make a cake now? I think so! That's a way better use for it than a flower stand ;).

I'm thinking it would be real cute to make a set of three of these in different heights and use them at a party to hold tasty treats. What do you think? I might have to go on a hunt for some more wood!

Pretty White Office Chairs {A Roundup} and My Quest To Find One

I've been working from home for nearly two months now (man, how time flies!), and have realized that it's crucial to have a comfortable and supportive office chair. When I madeover my little office nook in the bedroom, I decided I would make do with using a spare dining chair until we move in a few months since we don't exactly have a ton of space in our tiny apartment. Adding another chair just seemed like a pain. Since our plan is for me to have an actual office (hopefully, fingers crossed!) in our new place, why try to make room for another chair now?

Well, as it turns out, after sitting in this chair for about eight hours a day, five days a week, my back started to hurt. Like, ache. No bueno. I realized there was no way I was going to make it in that chair for the next few months without having to see a chiropractor regularly.

Doesn't look like the most comfortable chair to sit in all day, does it? I figure a new chair is probably cheaper than several chiropractor visits :).

I started a search to find a comfy office chair, but I had pretty strict criteria:
  • Ergonomic (obvi based on my current experience with a bad chair)
  • White (I flat out refused to have a black office chair in the light and airy office space I created, ha!)
  • Inexpensive (in my head, less than $100 was ideal)
  • Not an eyesore (do you know how many ugly office chairs exist?)
Turns out, finding a chair that met all those criteria was hard! All the ones I loved were pricey, or if they were in the price range, they weren't all that attractive or looked cheap. In my hunt, I came across six that I really loved. Here they are in case you're in the market:

six beautiful modern white office/desk chairs

But ultimately, most of these were out of my budget.

Since I've never been a person who quits easily when it comes to looking for a good deal, I did a last-ditch-effort Craigslist search and...drumroll please...my perfect chair came up as the top listing - right on budget at $90 to boot. What? When does that ever happen? I think it was meant to be. I promptly called and made sure they had one in stock and went and picked it up yesterday evening.

If you're in the DC area, as of 1/27 the listing was still up, so if you want one, check out this post for details.

I put it together last night, but haven't had a chance to take any photos yet. It looks so good in my office area though - I'm so excited about it! (And so is my back!) I'll be sure to take some updated photos soon and show you :).

Happy Tuesday, y'all!

Be Bold Challenge {Announcement}

Happy Monday, y'all! I'm SO excited to announce a little something I'm participating in that's coming up in just less than a month called the Be Bold Challenge. What's this you say? What kind of challenge? Well I, along with ten other bloggers, have been challenged by Carrie, of Lovely Etc. to take on a bold project - something that's outside of my comfort zone. She challenged us to take a risk, try a new tool, or do something that we aren't entirely sure will work. This is something she's trying to do more of in her projects in 2014 and she wanted to invite others to be a part of it.

Here's what she had to say about her reasoning behind starting this challenge:
"The Be Bold Challenge began because I was sick and tired of not trying new projects just because I was scared of failure.  This year, my goal is to learn to fail.  To learn that it is really okay to try for something awesome and end up with something awful.  It is easy to make sure you never, ever fail at anything.  But when you do that, you miss out on pretty much everything great.  I’m done with mediocre.  I’m ready for lots of awesome. I decided it was time to change things and invited some other bloggers to be bold with me."
How's that for inspiration? You can see why I immediately said, "Yes!" to her invitation. I've got a fun project in mind for our bedroom that I think has the potential to be awesome, but it's a risk! I've been wanting to do this project for awhile now, but was reluctant because I wasn't sure if it would work. This challenge was just the kick in the pants that I needed to simply try it. What's the worst that can happen?

I'll be back here with the results of the project in mid-February along with these other ladies awesome ladies who are participating:

But guess what? This challenge isn't just for me, it's for Y-O-U too. Want to be bold with us? Take some time over the next few weeks to take on a challenging project, write about it and come back here to share it on February 24th. We're having a GIANT link party where your project will show up on all 11 participating blogs. How cool is that?

So go get 'em! Be bold. I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Lovely Links

Happy Friday! Here are eight lovely links to kick of the weekend :). See y'all next week!

1 | I'm so so impressed with Krista's creative use of dollar store materials and paint to make this tiered jewelry stand. The results are pretty dang awesome.

2 | Emily's new set of {free!} iPhone case inserts is adorable.

3 | I'm a big fan of the salty/sweet combo, and these Reese's pretzel bites from Making Home Base definitely fit the bill. YUM!

4 | I love a good house tour, and I'm totally digging the one from Lacquer and Linen over at Primitive and Proper. Watch out, I might move in!

5 | This little sconce from Urban Outfitters caught my eye this week. I'd really love to have two of these flanking our bed (maybe in white?).

6 | I love this workspace. It's so light, bright and cheery! Now that I work from home, I find myself drawn to photos of chic home office spaces :).

7 | I love "touring" apartments and homes from my city via this crazy thing called the Internet. This lovely DC loft is home to a lady army captain. Yes, an army captain!

8 | Ashley wrote about why they aren't moving this week and her honesty and thoughts about being content are so refreshing! Read more here.

Have a great weekend, y'all!

Dinner Party Essentials

This weekend, we're hosting a dinner party for some of our friends from church, and all week I've been thinking about little ways to make the evening run smoothly so that I can really enjoy our company and not be preoccupied with prepping food, making drinks, etc. The more I do in advance, and the more I have ready to go when they arrive, the more fun it will be for everyone! I've also been thinking about what supplies I'll have around and ready to go so that people can help themselves to food and beverages.

Here is my list of essentials:

One thing I'd add? Think about the mood or feel you want to have for the party, and then put together a music playlist using Spotify (my fave!) or choose a Pandora station. I feel like music can really set the tone for a party and makes people feel welcome!

We love hosting people, and can't wait for this weekend!

Do you have any go-to dinner party or favorite hosting essentials?

And a special thanks to Personal Creations for their inspiration for this post. Check out their housewarming gifts page if you're in need of a hostess, wedding or birthday gift for someone in your life! (They didn't compensate me in any way for this post - just provided a link to their page for me to check out!)

Church Storage Closet Organization

A couple of months ago, I got recruited to help organize my church's storage areas. Being a lover of organization, I was thrilled to be asked to be involved! We're starting the planning process now so we're currently figuring out what the needs are and how to best use the space that we have. I've never organized a communal space like this before, so I've been spending a good chunk of time brainstorming to make sure I don't miss anything and that I'm considering all the needs, wants, and desires of all involved parties.

Our church currently rents space from another local church (they meet in the mornings and we have the sanctuary for the evenings), so our storage space is a little crazy and scattered there. We have a funky-shaped closet and two large metal cabinets to hold everything we need for the service each week. Also, different people set up and tear down every week, so the storage system has to be super user-friendly and well-labeled. It's certainly a unique project, and the storage is tight, but I'm excited about it!

To kickstart my planning, I've been brushing up on organization tips and tricks as well as scouring Pinterest and the web to find inspiration. One of my favorite sets of practical closet organizing tips came from the RedEnvelope blog. Though it's clothing-related, rather than storage-related, the tips are really great, so check it out if you're planning a closet-related organization project of your own!

Here are some of the inspiration photos I've found for closet and shelving storage:

{Pink Suede Shoe via Flickr}

{IKEA via DigsDigs}

I feel like I've already learned a ton in planning for this unique project. To make it a little more manageable, I've come up with a few ways to streamline the planning process and hopefully make the end result a huge success when it's all said and done. So far I've:

  • Acquired a list of important contact people who use and are in charge of these items each week. Our church has different teams such as hospitality, music, children's ministry, etc. and each of those teams has a leader.
  • Asked for a list of every item that needs to be stored - from sound equipment down to the paper plates we use for after church feasts.
  • Created a survey for each team leader to fill out with things such as their wants and needs, what's currently working well and what's not, and where they want their items to be stored (e.g. in the metal cabinet vs. the closet).
Next, we're planning a "clean out the closet" day for the near future, and then it'll be onto the real hands-on part - the organizing!

We will definitely be needing some new, sturdy storage bins, but we're on a tight budget. If any of you have any ideas on where to get durable, inexpensive, preferably clear tupperware bins with lids, I'm definitely open to ideas!! Shoot them my way, please :).

Have any of you ever undertaken a major community-oriented project like this? I'd love your wisdom if you have. Hopefully I'll be able to snap some photos and report back on the progress of this project soon!

Pantry Organization {Take Two}

Last week I mentioned how I had failed needed to revisit some of the areas I organized in our home last year. One of those lovely areas was our pantry - or should I say, half a cabinet in our kitchen. It was tough to keep everything we needed in such a small area, and if we ever acquired anything larger than a box of Triscuits from the grocery store, we were in trouble.

Here's what it looked like for a few months after I organized it the first time:

Clearly there wasn't a lot of wiggle room in there, and it was soon apparent that the "system" I put in place wasn't working.

The cabinet (and surrounding countertop area) looked like this before I got to working on it over the weekend:

Not terrible, but as you can see, we were storing bags of chips and other snacks on the counter since we had no other room - not ideal. It was time for a change. I somehow needed to increase the size of our pantry without really changing much else in the kitchen.

So I did what I always do when I first start an organization project...EMPTIED EVERYTHING. Then I did some brainstorming and space planning.

{By the way, I cannot tell you how much it bothers me that the cabinets in our rental are yellowy-white while the trim is pure white and the white in the granite is also pure white...could they not have painted the cabinets the same color as the trim? The photo above shows how nicely it clashes, so I thought I'd take a moment to point that out :). }

The wine glasses I kept in the top right of the double cabinet got relocated since we hardly ever use them (we typically use our stemless glasses that live in the secretary-turned-bar). They were taking up prime real estate that I knew would be better utilized as food or other storage for oft-used items. That little change made a huge difference in my organization strategy.

In order to make more room I did some other creative rearranging as well including cleaning out the little double cabinet above the fridge (no photos of that, sorry! It was boring anyway...) and this cabinet to the right...

Out came the mixing bowls, strainers, and other random bowls and containers. Once I was done emptying out, I was left with these gloriously empty cabinets ready to be filled up again.

Meanwhile, all the stuff from those cabinets ended up here:

...and here. Ack.

{Oh hello $6 rug. I heart you.}

After a little strategy session with myself, a little purging and a little consolidating, everything went back onto the shelves. I adjusted the heights of said shelves to better utilize the available space and commandeered one additional shelf for food items in the double cabinet. Also, the mixing bowls, measuring cups and strainers moved from the cabinet to the right to this double cabinet. And look! There's nothing on the counter anymore! Victory.

The pantry shelves have some room to spare now. I can bring groceries home and have somewhere for them to go!

Drinking glasses (along with a couple of other items) did a switcheroo to the cabinet to the right. They're still just as easy to access and are less crowded on these shelves than they were before.

There's way more breathing room now, and there's even room to grow a little bit. It may not look like Martha Stewart, but hey, function is the key here, right? Here's to hoping this new system works out better than the previous one!

So that's the story of my failure-turned-turned victory in the pantry department.

I hope this is encouraging to y'all and shows you that just because you organize something in your home once, that doesn't mean that it will work perfectly. In fact, sometimes it just doesn't and you have to start over again. I'm ok with that. Organization, just like most things in life, has its ups and downs. You just have to be willing to admit that something isn't working and try again!

2014 UNword of the Year

As I mentioned on Friday, I'm jumping on another ___ of the year bandwagon: choosing an UNword. It's a nice complement to choosing a word of the year, don't you think? Rhythm is my word, and my UNword is distraction. This is the word I want to NOT be my theme for the year. It embodies something I want to eliminate from my life rather than embrace.

I hope the Nester doesn't think I'm copying her...

...Even though I kind of am. I don't think she'll mind though, because it is actually something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

Distracted is what I feel all. the. time. My mind is always going in a million directions. I've got a million ideas swirling all up in there. I check my iPhone compulsively for new emails, new Facebook updates, new Instagrams. I'm distracted by myself, by the world around me, by work...you get the gist.

By nature, I'm a multitasker, a list maker, a doer, and a person with high idea productivity (yep that's a thing). On their own, those things are good qualities, but when they go haywire and happen all at once, it becomes a problem.

There are certainly good distractions in my life too, but because I'm always flitting from one thing to the next, sometimes I miss out on them. For example, did you know it's hard to really listen and have a deep conversation with a friend when you let your mind wander to your to do list or your schedule for tomorrow?

I'm guessing this is familiar territory for a lot of you.

I think that in order to start eliminating distraction I need to slow down and put blinders on, if you will, so I can do things well instead of just adding more, more, more until my head explodes. More focus. Less wandering.

I've been trying to do this over the past week or so and it's hard. I know it'll take time (the rest of my life?) to develop good habits to break the distraction habit. I'm praying hard against it too. I know I can't do this on my own.

So will you join me in choosing an UNword of the year? These wonderful ladies below (Fieldstone Hill Design, Nesting Place, Life in Grace and The Painted House) are hosting a gathering tomorrow on their blogs to discuss UNwords. I'm planning to be there to check out others' plans for what they're leaving behind for 2014. Even if you don't have a blog, I'd love to hear what your is!
