Yarn Snowball Ornaments

Annnnd...welcome to Day 7 of 12 Days of Handmade Ornaments! We're more than halfway through this craziness and I must say it's been quite the ride.
Today we're making yarn snowball ornaments! If you've ever make yarn pom poms, guess what? These are the same thing. When they're made with fluffy white yarn however...they're like snowballs! Ta da!

All you need for this project is a big ball of yarn, scissors and a good TV show on in the background. They're a bit time consuming when you're making a bunch, but they're not hard to make.

Here's how to make them:

Wrap the yarn around your fingers on one hand about 40-50 times. The amount of times you wrap it will depend on how fluffy your yarn is. The thinner it is, the more times you'll need to wrap it.

Once you're done wrapping it around your fingers, slide it carefully off your hand. Take a short piece (about 12 inches) of yarn and tie it around the center of the ball of yarn. Cinch it tightly!

P.S. You might want to cut that short piece of yarn before you do all that wrapping around your fingers. You'll have your hands full (literally).

Once the shorter string is cinched tightly, the yarn ball will look like the photo below.

See all those pretty loops? We're going to cut them all apart now. Grab the scissors and cut through small sections until all the loops become strings.

Fluff it up so it looks like a bad case of bedhead.

And finally, give it a little haircut so that the ball looks more uniform and orderly.

That's it! It seems like a lot of steps from the photos, but once you get one of these babies done, you'll be able to knock a bunch of them out pretty quickly.

Then you can make a yarn snowball tree like this!

I love these guys. They'd also make a great garland or look lovely piled up in a glass bowl on a table. There are tons of possibilities!

Now it's time to hop over to see all the other creative ornaments created by my lovely blogging friends!
