We've got a big, blank wall in our living room that could really use a big ole piece of art, and I'm thinking maybe, just maybe I could DIY an abstract for it. I've never done anything like that before, but I'm certainly willing to try! *Fingers crossed*
I'm such a visual person that I decided I needed to round up some inspiration before diving into the world of painting. I scoured the internet and found nine paintings that have the vibe I'm going for for the piece. And bonus, if I chicken out on making something myself, at least I have a bunch of resources for pretty art to purchase! Most of these are from Etsy, which has a ton of beautiful, affordable art.
As I was pulling together this little collection I noticed they all had pretty much the same color palette and several of them have this kind of spotted/dotted situation that I love. I think it's safe to say that I've found my style when it comes to this kind of art!
If you've ever DIY'd anything like these pretty pieces, please send any advice my way! I'm all ears...
I just wanted to say don't be afraid to DIY some art! You can totally do this and it doesn't have to break the bank either. I did AP art in high school and now I'm an elementary school art teacher. Although I don't have the budget to let 500 elementary school kids paint on canvases, I've been teaching summer art classes and so I've found cheap ways to get quality art supplies. Depending on how big of a canvas you want, you can buy it at Michael's or Jo-Ann's with a 40% off coupon, or you could find an ugly canvas painting at a thrift store, then get spray gesso to spray over it and make it fresh and white and pretty for you to start out with. If you're doing abstract art, palette knives are a great way to go. You can use acrylic or oil paint, they both have pros and cons. Acrylics are usually cheaper and they dry much faster, the drawback is that if you don't use all the paint you put in your palette, you may waste some when it dries out. I haven't worked with acrylics a whole lot, but a friend of mine has told me you can lengthen the "lifespan" if you put your palette in the freezer when you stop and then spray a little water on the paint when you start the next time. The other thing I don't love about acrylics is that they don't blend with each other on the canvas quite as well as oil paint because they dry so quickly. Oil paint can be more expensive, and it has a stronger smell, and it's harder to clean out your brush (although if you're using a palette knife you don't have to worry about that, just wipe it off with a paper towel). But oil paints blend on the canvas beautifully, which is because they take a long time to dry. So you can paint in one area and come back a while later to the same area with another color and it will blend with what's there nicely, rather than going right over the top of it like acrylics do. But the longer drying time can be annoying too. When you finish a painting, plan on it taking a day or more to dry before you can touch it if you use oil paint. Acrylic will be dry to the touch in just an hour or two. Here's a couple links to the paints and palette knives I buy on Amazon--cheap, but high quality as far as I've found:

DeleteOh and I forgot to tell you, if you use oil paint, you can keep leftover paint in your palette almost indefinitely as long as you put it in the freezer! Weird, right? & if you end up using a brush instead of palette knife, clean it with mineral spirits.
